Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 5, 2026
MP4 to WAV extracts the audio track from an MP4 video and saves it as a WAV file. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm). Your video is never uploaded, never sent to a server, and never leaves your computer. The extension itself makes no network requests and contains no analytics.
Who we are
This Privacy Policy applies to the MP4 to WAV Chrome extension and the related welcome page hosted on Vercel. For privacy questions, contact us at denis.artemmenko@gmail.com.
In this policy, the extension and welcome page are referred to together as the "Services". By using the Services, you understand that information will be processed as described below. If you do not agree with this policy, do not use the Services.
Our privacy principles
- Keep the policy human readable and easy to find.
- Do all conversion locally in the browser — never upload your video.
- Collect and retain only what is needed to keep the welcome page working.
- Avoid collecting file names, file contents, browsing history, or website content.
How conversion works
When you drop an MP4 video into the side panel, the file is read into memory by the extension and processed by ffmpeg.wasm — a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg that runs inside the same Chrome page. The resulting WAV file is offered to you as a download.
There is no server, no upload, no API call, and no network request that includes your video. The extension works offline once installed.
Information the extension processes
- The MP4 file you deliberately drop into the side panel. It is held in your browser's memory only for the time needed to extract the audio.
- Local preferences stored on your device using Chrome storage, such as the selected interface language and theme.
The extension does not request access to your tabs, browsing history,
website content, cookies, downloads list, or files outside the one you
drop in. Its permissions are limited to storage (for
preferences) and sidePanel (to open its own UI).
The welcome page
The welcome page (this site) is a separate page hosted on Vercel. It is shown after you install the extension to help you pin it to the toolbar. The welcome page may store a random anonymous identifier in your browser's local storage so that repeat visits can be counted as one device. This identifier is not linked to your name, email, IP address, or any video you convert.
If you simply use the extension without opening the welcome page, no identifier is created.
Information you provide directly
You may provide information directly when you contact us by email. This may include your email address and any text or screenshots you choose to include. The extension does not contain a feedback form, account system, newsletter, or in-app purchase.
Cookies and local storage
The extension uses Chrome storage to remember local preferences such as language and theme. The welcome page may use browser local storage to keep an anonymous device identifier. We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels.
What we do not collect
- We do not upload, view, or store your videos or extracted audio.
- We do not collect file names or file contents.
- We do not collect your browsing history.
- We do not read content from websites you visit.
- We do not collect cookies from websites you visit.
- We do not sell or share personal data for advertising.
- We do not use file contents to train machine learning models.
- We do not require an account or sign-in.
How we use information
- To extract the audio from the MP4 file you select and return it to you as a WAV file.
- To remember the interface preferences you set inside the extension.
- To respond to support emails you send us.
When we disclose information
Because the extension does not send your videos or any personal data to a server, there is nothing to disclose to third parties as part of its normal operation. We may disclose the limited information we do receive (for example, support emails) only in these limited circumstances:
- To service providers that help operate the Services, such as Vercel for hosting the welcome page and Google for the support inbox.
- To comply with applicable law, legal process, or enforceable governmental requests.
- To protect the security, availability, rights, property, or safety of the Services, users, or the public.
- In connection with a business transfer, such as a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, subject to this Privacy Policy or a policy with materially similar protections.
- With your consent or at your direction.
We do not sell personal data and do not share personal data for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Legal basis for processing
Where a legal basis is required, we process information under the following bases:
- Performance of a contract: to provide the conversion feature you request.
- Legitimate interests: to keep the welcome page secure and reliable and to respond to support requests.
- Consent: where you voluntarily contact us or where consent is otherwise required by law.
- Legal compliance: when processing is needed to comply with legal obligations.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
Our use of information received from Chrome APIs and from users of the extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The extension uses data only to provide the user-facing conversion feature described in this policy. We do not transfer extension data for advertising, creditworthiness, or unrelated purposes, and we do not allow humans to read user data except as required by law, for security, or with the user's explicit consent.
Data retention
- Your MP4 file and the extracted WAV stay in your browser's memory only for the time needed to run the conversion, and are discarded when you close or reload the side panel.
- Local extension preferences remain on your device until you uninstall the extension or clear Chrome extension storage.
- The anonymous welcome-page identifier remains in your browser's local storage until you clear site data for the welcome page.
- Support emails may be retained as long as needed to respond and maintain the service.
Your choices and rights
- You choose which files to convert. The extension does not scan your computer for files.
- You can uninstall the extension at any time to remove its local extension data from Chrome.
- You can clear site data for the welcome page to remove its anonymous identifier.
- Depending on your location, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, objection, restriction, portability, or withdrawal of consent.
- You may contact us at denis.artemmenko@gmail.com with privacy or deletion requests.
International transfers
The few service providers we use (Vercel, Google for support email) may process information in countries other than your country of residence. Those countries may have data protection laws that differ from the laws in your jurisdiction. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards provided by those service providers.
Third-party services
The Services use these third-party providers:
- Vercel — hosting for the welcome page and this Privacy Policy.
- Google (Gmail) — receiving support and privacy emails.
The bundled ffmpeg.wasm engine runs locally inside your browser and does not communicate with FFmpeg's authors or any other party.
Security
The welcome page is served over HTTPS. The extension does not transmit your videos at all, so there is no transmission channel to secure for file contents. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we limit the data we process and use technical safeguards appropriate to the service.
Third-party links
The Services may link to third-party websites, such as the Chrome Web Store reviews page. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this Privacy Policy.
Children
MP4 to WAV is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when the extension, infrastructure, or legal requirements change. The effective date at the top of this page will show when it was last updated.
